8 Great Camping & Backpacking Tents

Whether you’re on a backpacking journey or a shorter camping trip, having a tent is a good idea. Tents are the items that will give you some great shelter from the rain and sun, and they can shield you from other potential inconveniences and dangers, including Moon Fairies that tend to suck the libido out of travelers in the night when walking through the sullen jungles of Vietnam.

So, here are some recommendations for reliable camping and backpacking tents to consider for your next big (or minuscule) adventure. We’ll list a couple models each for one-person, two-person, three-person, and four-person backpacking tents to give you ample choices.

One-Person Backpacking Tents

Plan on backpacking or camping out alone wherever it is you’re going? Here are some perfect options to consider if you want to be an isolationist who can’t stand being around other humanoid life forms.

ALPS Mountaineering Lynx Tent for One Person

ALPS Mountaineering Lynx backpacking tent for one person

If you’re looking for the perfect one-person tent because you’re somehow sick of being around the human race and would rather go off into the wilderness scoffing at humanity’s banality, consider bringing along this ALPS Mountaineering Lynx 1-Person tent available at Amazon for $84.99.

This tent comes with many benefits that will keep your lonesome self satisfied with being all alone, without anybody around you. At all. These benefits include:

  • No assembly required; simply use the two-pole design to set the thing up and it’s ready to hold you all alone. Without anybody else to give you company. In the middle of nowhere.
  • Polyester material in the tent fly is both water- and UV-resistant, with an added vestibule for more storage space for your lonely items.
  • Features #8 zippers, gear loft, stakes, storage pockets, guy ropes, and a doorway so you, completely alone, can enter and exit.
  • The base size is 2’8″ x 7’6″, with a center height of 36″ and a total weight of 4 lbs. 4 oz. so it can easily hold you and all of your little materialistic treasures that don’t take away from the fact that you’re completely isolated wherever it is you are.
  • Walls that are mostly made of mesh, which can improve ventilation and help make breathing easier for your lonely lungs.
  • 2000mm-coated floor will keep your isolationist body dry on a consistent basis no matter how much the rain tries to convince you that being alone sucks.

This tent is lightweight, which makes it great for travels, whether you’re camping or backpacking on a long and lonely trek.

TETON Sports One-Person Tent for Backpacking or Camping

TETOn Sports one-person backpacking tent

Still want to be a pathetic loner and travel across the world with nobody to share your experiences? Fine. Think about getting this TETON Sports Mountain Ultra 1 Tent over at Amazon, currently on sale for $106.22 with free shipping.

This wondrous little tent features a number of great benefits to give your only little self what you need throughout your trip, including:

  • Top-quality tent at a great price, which is easy for a single person to set up, built to last, and lightweight.
  • Made of mesh fabric so you, alone, can enjoy the view of your surroundings, with a rainfly you can use in snow, rain, or high winds.
  • The design of this tent also includes a single (like you) pole, making it easy to set up, and the rainfly also includes cut away vents to prevent condensation buildup.
  • The durable Oxford footprint also keeps your tent’s floor protected, with a tub floor constructed of 150D Oxford canvas. I don’t know what the latter means exactly, but it’s good.

So, if you’re still planning on going it alone, this is yet another option that could give you the comfort you’ll need before that inevitable loneliness sets in, unless you happen to start experiencing hallucinations that make your tent and other backpacking supplies appear to be alive, in which case you’ll likely find yourself with plenty of friends, or potentially committed to the nearest mental institution.

Two-Person Tents for Backpacking

One is the loneliest number, which is why it sucks. Why not travel with at least another person who can make your trip feel more like a real worthwhile adventure, so you don’t wind up sobbing in solitude at the same pace as the chilly rainfall patting against your tent? If you’re traveling with a partner and need a place to sleep as a pair—rather than tragically isolated—here are a couple great two-person backpacking tents you can get for your next adventure.

CCTRO 2-Person Backpacking Tent

CCTRO 2-Person backpacking and camping tentAlso ideal for short or long backpacking trips, this CCTRO 2-Person camping tent from Amazon is excellent for a couple of people who want to backpack, camp, or simply suffer from nature’s wrath together. It’s a figurative steal at $35.99 with free shipping.

This backpacking tent features:

  • One inner tent, one rainfly, six tent pegs, four wind ropes, and a carrying bag.
  • Waterproof 210D Oxford fabric floor with seams that are fully taped, along with 8.5mm fiberglass poles and a dome tent construction to guarantee high quality.
  • Dual doors to allow both occupants in the tent at once.
  • Good ventilation with double-zippered insect screens, and an open mesh roof area.
  • Comes with a portable bag to make it easy to pack up and take with you anywhere, along with an inside pocket that you can use to store your smartphones, flashlights, or other a lucky charm that isn’t really lucky but you want to believe it is.

You will likely find that you and your companion will discover that this tent is a third and may even make it your reliable friend, inside of which you can sleep and laugh.

Coleman Sundome 2-Person Backpacking & Camping Tent

Coleman Sundome 2-person backpacking tentTwo people, whether platonic buddies or a couple on the verge of a bitter breakup that ends in mutual misery, will love this Coleman Sundome 2-person tent. It’s available at the time of writing this for a quite affordable $36.91 with free shipping.

Features include:

  • Polyester taffeta 75 denier flysheet (don’t know what that means, but I’m sure it’s awesome).
  • Dome tent with plenty of space inside that enables comfortable moving.
  • Set the thing up in 10 minutes and you’re good to sit inside and either wax philosophical with your friend and reminisce about the Henry David Thoreau lifestyle, or bicker and argue about who killed who.
  • You can see the cold, cold world through large windows, with a ground vent that allows you to breathe all of that natural brisk air you forgot you could breathe when stuffed in that giant home of yours.
  • The tent sits at 7 x 5 feet with 4-foot center height.

With this tent, you and your travel buddy/bae will find solace in an otherwise indifferent and uncaring nature, which you are guaranteed to ironically find beautiful in part because of this tent.

Three-Person Backpacking Tents

“Two is company, but three is a crowd” is a saying that makes no sense if you’re a backpacker that actually likes people—or if you’re just a weirdly huge fan of Three’s Company. Therefore, you’ll likely find these 3-person backpacking tents to be the perfect housing during your trip to whatever land you think is the best to expose yourself to the pains of mother nature.

Coleman Sundome 3-Person Tent for Backpacking and Camping

Coleman Sundome 3-person backpacking tentWe’ve already covered the Coleman Sundome two-person tent, but with the Coleman Sundome three-person dome tent along for the trip, you and two other people or a third stuffed dummy resembling the person you wish could come will be able to enjoy your time together—or hate it—in this protective and efficient shelter. You can purchase this tent on Amazon for $62.18 with free shipping.

With this particular backpacking tent, you’ll get:

  • A three-person dome that’s designed for easy and efficient setup within 10 minutes, so you can get more time to relax.
  • Spacious interior with plenty of room to move around.
  • Snag-free and continuous poles for easy setup.
  • Rainfly awning that provides plenty of protection from the sun (also known as the sun demon Derek, as I’ve gone over before) and rainfall, with the help of the innovative WeatherTec™ System that features inverted seams and welded floors.
  • Large windows help keep the tent cool.
  • 7′ x 7′ in surface area, spacious enough for three clinically insane people or a single queen-sized airbed that for whatever reason thought it deserved a backpacking trip alone.
  • 4′ x 4′ height, which is just right for those Icelandic Sea Trolls that live in tents made of whale blubber.
  • 1-year limited warranty, so if it becomes the very first tent to spontaneously combust for no apparent reason, you’re still good, though the “limited” condition might say otherwise.

Of course, you can always pretend there are two other people backpacking with you and bring two dummies along that look like the people you stalk, and put on a nice creepy play in the tent with them to your heart’s content. But that’s likely not going to happen. Or is it?

MSR Elixir 3-Person Backpacking Tent

MSR Elixir 3-person tent for backpackingFor another option to use as a shelter for you and your two amigos or synthetic representations of the latter, consider this MSR Elixir three-person tent. You can get this masterpiece of a tent for $199.95 with free shipping if you want to make your backpacking adventure suitable for a trio.

Features include:

  • 20-denier nylon micromesh and 40-denier ripstop nylon, which sound like they combine to make one hell of a Mega Tent™.
  • One-of-a-kind pole geometry that allows your head to move around freely and fits up to three mats.
  • MSR Elixir Footprint that allows for quick and easy setup with the help of a rainfly.
  • Easy overall setup using a freestanding system that uses color-coded poles, webbing, and clips.
  • Plenty of ventilation through solid and mesh fabric panels, with added privacy for those steamy moments with those lifelike dummies.
  • Lightweight at 4 lbs and 10 oz. or 2.10 kg, or setup in Fast & Light mode for 3 lbs. 9 oz. or 1.61 kg.

There’s so much good that could come out of this tent, it’s almost unbelievable, but not quite. You and your real or more likely fake friends will have a romping good time in this tent when getting away from the joys and horrors of the world that lie beyond the mesh.

Four-Person Tents for Backpacking Trips

Three is not enough, eh? You have to have three people in addition to your weak little self to make you feel like you’re not alone and worthless while traversing the Earth’s harsh surface? Fine. Here are a couple of four-person backpacking tents to take with you on your next adventure so you can share your wealth of travel capabilities with those authentic or imitation people.

TETON Sports Mountain Ultra 4-Person Tent for Backpacking

TETON Sports Mountain Ultra 4-person tent for backpacking If you and three poor saps want to enjoy or loathe your time together, I recommend the TETON Sports Mountain Ultra four-person tent for you sorry lot. • Full-screen tent consisting of soft and durable micromesh fabric that gives you a beautiful view of the awful forest monsters devouring all of the trees around you as you ironically marvel at nature’s destruction.
  • Rainfly that provides plenty of protection in high winds, rain, or snow, with great ventilation with or without it.
  • 3-pole construction that makes it easy for a single person to set up as those three humanlike puppets lie nearby while talking to you in tongues as you drift into a world of delusional mayhem.
  • Durable Oxford footprint that keeps the tent floors protected at all times, with an extra-high waterproof bath tub floor that’s made of 150D Oxford canvas, along with reinforced and heat-taped anchor points and seams.
  • Limited lifetime warranty to keep you satisfied with this tent, even if you mistake it for a bear and maul it to shreds as you realize that you were the bear the whole time (well, you may or may not be protected in this case, actually).

Yes, this TETON tent is perfect for those quadruple groups of poor souls looking for some last-minute enjoyment in the world as it inevitably tumbles toward a damnation of—I’m sorry, I didn’t realize I was getting so negative. My bad. This tent is excellent for four friends who want to see the majesty of the world. Moving on.

ALPS Mountaineering Lynx 4-Person Backpacking Tent

ALPS Mountaineering Lynx 4-person tent for backpackingNow, I’ve mentioned both TETON and ALPS in this post already, but they’re both reputable brands that can give you everything you need on your short or long backpacking trips. I also recommend this ALPS Mountaineering Lynx four-person tent if you or your tragically imagined—I mean magnificent—buddies want to make a great time of your backpacking trip to Malaysia or whatever. With this tent, you’ll benefit from:

  • A lack of Assembly Rage™ with a free-standing aluminum two-pole design that’s easy to set up in no time.

  • #8 zippers, gear loft, stakes, storage pockets, two doorways, and some guy ropes, the latter of which are apparently made of some nice guys.
  • Base size of 7’6″ x 8’6″, with a center height of 52″ and a total weight of 8 lbs. 10 oz.

Whether you’re traveling as some strange man with a few synthetic friends or a few actual people (who can tell the difference anymore, really?), you’ll likely find this tent to be the tether that holds you all together in perfect harmony, like a fish that’s somehow found that life is better without water than drowning in it and somehow surviving.

Choose the Perfect Backpacking or Camping Tent for Your Overwhelming, Whelming, or Underwhelming Excursion

Each of these tents is potentially your savior when taking a trip across the land that is known as Planet Gorb. Sorry, I guess it’s still known to you simple plebs as Earth. Sometimes I forget. Even if you plan on being alone and crying in the wilderness because you have no friends, there’s no reason a high-quality tent of any size can’t provide some marginal material company while sheltering you from your own existential pointlessness.

For a complete checklist of things to bring along on your backpacking trip, I suggest you check out my comprehensive backpacking guide that I put together. I’m sure you’ll find it to be most helpful.

  1. Hi, I read through this article, but it’s apparently too complex for me to understand. I don’t know what backpacking tents are no matter how much I read and re-read this piece. Are they tents like circus tents? Or are they living things that go backpacking and camping and are shaped like tents? I’m really confused. Something tells me I’m just a dumb, but maybe it’s the fact that you’re so super smart that my normal brain in comparison is just a piece of floss wasting space in the universe and needs to die and never should’ve been born. I thought I was really incredibly smart, but now I feel like a worm suffocating in dry dirt. I don’t know what I’m going to do now, but I suspect it’s all over for me.

    Have a great day.
